PM expresses condolences over Pope’s passing

Prime Minister (PM) Jeremiah Manele has joined other national leaders around the world to convey a formal message of condolence following the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis, who was called to rest on Easter Monday, 21 April 2025.

In his message on behalf of the Government and people of Solomon Islands to His Excellency Monsignor Mauro Lalli, Non-Resident Ambassador Designate of the Apostolic Nunciature to Solomon Islands, the Prime Minister expressed deep sorrow and extended sincere sympathies to the Holy See, the global Catholic community, and all Catholics in Solomon Islands.

“Pope Francis will be remembered for his faith, humility, and his consistent call for peace across the world,” Prime Minister Manele said.

“His efforts to advocate for the disadvantaged and marginalized, as well as his messages of love, hope, and the moral imperative to address global challenges such as climate change, remain relevant and impactful.”

The Solomon Islands Government acknowledges the late Pope’s lifelong dedication to the Church and to the values of compassion, justice, and unity. His leadership marked a significant period in modern Church history and left an enduring legacy.

The Government and people of Solomon Islands join the international community in mourning the passing of Pope Francis, while giving thanks for his life of service.

In Honiara a memorial mass will be held this Friday at the Holy Cross Cathedral to honour his life and service.
