Flying Fijians and Swire Shipping Fijian Drua halfback Peni Matawalu is under police investigation following allegations of domestic violence.
Police confirmed that an assault complaint has been filed, alleging Matawalu had assaulted his wife, resulting in her hospitalisation.
Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said, “We can confirm an alleged case of assault that is under investigation and that investigators are awaiting the medical report.”
Swire Shipping Fijian Drua general manager Baden Stephenson said they had conducted their own investigation.
“We were aware of news reports of potential investigations by the authorities, and it’s only fair to all parties concerned to let that process take its course as well,” he said.
Mr Stephenson said that, based on the information, the investigation panel made several recommendations and submitted a formal report to the CEO Mark Evans.
Matawalu resumed training with the side yesterday.
Fijian Drua general manager Commercial Shane Hussein said: “Peni is back at training after being sanctioned, but with the report currently in the press, it’s important that we allow the process to take its course.”
The management of the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua chose not to associate the recent incident with former representative Vinaya Habosi, who was let go by the club.
“It’s just out of fairness to all parties involved, not just the player himself, that we don’t prejudice the investigation that is going on. We are unable to speculate as to what may happen.”
