Suva Grammar School sub-junior athlete John Vugakoto has set a new high jump record at the Suva Zone Two competition yesterday.

He jumped a height of 1.65m at the HFC Bank Stadium, Suva.

The Naigani, Lomaiviti, lad was only expecting a win; he has been training for the event two weeks ago.

“It feels great to break a record in my first year at high school and also my first zone,” he said.

“I only came to participate and I would like to thank God and the training I had done before I was able to do so.”

Vugakoto indicated he was trained by Victor Sigavou.

He has now shifted his focus to the Fiji Finals on April 24. Vugakoto hopes that he would break another record at the national school meet.

Being from a sporting family, the Year 9 student said he would like to like to represent Fiji in basketball.

“It’s just something about the game that made me really interested in it and will try my best to make the league.”
