Police have confirmed an investigation is underway in the alleged assault of a man by a police officer in Sigatoka.

A picture of the alleged assault victim is now viral on social media.

Fiji Police said a police officer lodged a report at the Sigatoka Police station that he was allegedly assaulted by a group of drunken youths.

“A cross report was lodged by health officials after the 24-year-old victim was brought to the hospital, claiming he was assaulted by the officer,” said Fiji Police Force.

“The Fiji Police Force’s Internal Affairs Department is handling the investigations and is expected to submit their initial findings to the Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu soon.”

The Commissioner of Police said that while he understands emotions run high when allegations are made against police officers, the priority will always remain on ensuring justice through the conduct of a thorough investigation.
