Apia, Samoa – 21 February 2025 – The FAST Party is not giving away much about what it plans to do when the HRPP Opposition Party moves a vote of no confidence in parliament next Tuesday.
According to the Leader of the Opposition, Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi, the motion is scheduled as the first order of parliament business when it convenes Tuesday 25 February.
The FAST Party Leader, Laaulialemalietoa Leuatea Polataivao told the media today that he and the party needs to know the gist and details of the motion whether it is against the Prime Minister or against the government.
Tuilaepa told the media this week that the motion of no confidence is based on the information already made official through communications to the Speaker of Parliament, the Head of State, Prime Minister and him as the Opposition Leader that outlined that the FAST party no longer have confidence in Fiame as the Prime Minister.
In a letter to the Speaker, Laauli and the FAST Party confirmed that the party holds 29 seats and has sacked 6 Cabinet ministers as members of the party including the Prime Minister and the Deputy Prime Minister. The Opposition holds 18 seats in parliament.
Laauli also insisted that the issue is with the party’s leadership and have already asked the Prime Minister to do the honourable thing and resign.
He has also insisted that the party does not support a snap election for the unnecessary burden that will place on the country and economy as a whole and it is unnecessary as FAST has the numbers to form a new government until the current term ends in March 2026.
Laauli told the media today that the FAST Party is not taking the vote of no confidence lightly and needs to get the details of the motion and will wait until the issue comes up on the parliament floor next Tuesday.
Asked if the party has decided on a replacement Prime Minister, Laauli said that would be a matter for the caucus to deliberate and choose.
“There is no shortage of able leaders to take over the leadership role,” said Laauli, “and God will provide one.”
