I can’t remember anything: Dakuwaqa

“I don’t remember what happened. I woke up in the drunk tank (cell for drunkards), without my shirt, wondering what I was doing there. With no memory,” he recalled.

Dismissed by Biarritz Olympique, former Fiji men’s rugby sevens star forward Masivesi Dakuwaqa expressed his regrets to a French daily newspaper for allegedly biting a teammate during a drinking session.

The Rio Olympic Games 2016 gold medallist told Le’ Equipe, that he did not know what had happened after drinking with his team-mates.

“We had organized this meal between players to strengthen our team spirit after a series of defeats,” he confided to L’Equipe. And while everything was going well, Dakuwaqa alleged that he had a ‘blackout’.

“I don’t remember what happened. I woke up in the drunk tank (cell for drunkards), without my shirt, wondering what I was doing there. With no memory,” he recalled.

The memory loss was due to excessive alcohol consumption.

“I drank too many beers,” he said.

Dakuwaqa said he still does not remember biting Pierre Pagès.

According to L’Equipe, the bite was so deep that the halfback had to have 20 stitches on his right cheek.

“I don’t understand how I could have done this,” said Dakuwaqa. And while he has not been in contact with Pages, the Fijian rugger has begged for forgiveness.

“I would like to hug him and say ‘Forgive me’. I am shocked by what I have done. I ask for forgiveness from you and your family,” he continued.

Deeply affected by his actions and its consequences, Dakuwaqa has promised his wife ‘never to touch another glass of alcohol’. Dakuwaqa has been summoned to appear before the Bayonne Criminal Court on May 30.
