Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) will announce the new head coaches for the Fijiana 7s and 15s this week.
This was confirmed to SUNsports by FRU chief executive officer Rovereto Nayacalevu on Saturday.
“The offer has been sent to the interested individuals,” Nayacalevu said.
“We are just waiting for the outcome of that.”
He confirmed that US-based sevens legend, Waisale Serevi had applied for the Fijiana 7s coaching position.
Serevi’s most recent coaching stint was with the Indian Women’s 7s side last year.
Former 7’s and 15’s player Sireli Bobo was also named by Nayacalevu. He remained mum in naming other applicants.
Serevi will join Bobo and the Fiji Sports Council coaching team today to support the Council’s Under-20 7’s squad preparations.
Over the weekend, Serevi was announced as the International Brand Ambassador for Aqua Pacific Natural Artesian Water.
Nayacalevu emphasised that they want the best for the two roles.
“The best that will work our team to improve on their game and bring results and improvements,” he said.
Fijiana 15 head coach
The position was left vacant after former head coach Mosese Rauluni’s departure on October last year.
Rauluni who took the Fijian Drua to their third consecutive Super W Grand-final last year also coached the Fijiana XV team to the Oceania Championship where they won and qualified for next year’s Rugby World Cup.
He was instrumental for the team as he led the Fijiana to record their first win against Japan.
“It is a big shoe to fill for someone coming in to take the reins,” he said.
“But by this week, we will announce a good replacement.”
Fijiana 7s head coach
The Fijiana 7s head coach post has been vacant after former Fiiana 7s coach Saiasi Fuli’s contract was not renewed when it ended December last year.
Fuli coached the team for five years, led the team to a bronze medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
In recognition of his contribution to rugby, he was awarded the 50th Independence Medal in 2021.
He also coached the team to the Paris Olympics. They fell short in the pool stages as they recorded a winless run in the games.
