The registration for the Namaka sevens and volleyball tournament has been extended.
This follows the reschedule of the tournament dates; volleyball will be held on January 17-18 while the rugby sevens will be hosted on January 24-25; these tournaments will be held at the Namaka Public School in Nadi.
Tournament coordinator Biu Tadranu said this was to avoid clashing with the McDonalds Fiji Coral Coast 7s next week which will be at Lawaqa Park, Sigatoka.
“Since the lauch last Friday, half of the teams have already been registered,” he said.
He said they will kick start with three categories for the volleyball tourney; 24 men’s and 10 women’s team.
The target for the mixed category is 16 teams.
There will be 6 volleyball courts.
Tadranu added that there will only be senior men’s and women’s for rugby sevens.
“We are aiming about 24 teams for men and eight women’s rugby teams.
“Under- 20 is not a confirmed category, but we have received a lot of interest for the past few days.”
They are looking at about 53 games for men and 23 games for women.
Tadranu said this would be the first time to host a Namaka Volleyball and rugby 7s tournament.
“It is a back-to-back sporting festival; our logo signifies aeroplane, and it sort of aligns with what Nadi is known for in the tourism industry.
“We have a vision to attract a lot of teams for the local and overseas teams.”
Purpose of this tournament
“We feel that Namaka Sevens has a bigger purpose in terms of getting the youths and giving them the platform to showcase their talents.
“We are aiming to build this as an annual tournament.’
“These rugby and volleyball tournament hopes to attract locals and overseas team,” Tadranu added.
He said few of the volleyball teams registered including Raiwai Eagles Volleyball Club, Golden Jet, Nadi Police, Raiwai Volleyball team, Votualevu and few resort too like, Mana Island Resort, Tanoa International Hotel.
The few rugby teams that have registered include Airport rugby, Sabeto rugby, Naduniu from Nakavu village.
Namaka Public School head teacher Arvin Kumar said as a school they are very excited to have the tournament in their school.
“The school management board, the teachers, the parents and the students believe in having this partnership bring the community together to the school. That is the way forward for the school,” Kumar said.
The two tournaments will be hosted by the partnership of West Event Fiji and the Waqadra Brothers Community; it was launched last Friday at the school.

Rugby 7s – Men’s – $500, Women’s team $400
