To be selected in another HSBC SVNS series leg is Rupeni Kabu’s 2025 goal.

The 27-year-old hopes to be named in head coach Osea Kolinisau’s 13-men side in any of the tournaments next year.

His last world tournament was at the 2023 Dubai sevens. It was also his series debut following his Oceania and Pacific Games performance the same year.

The Naila, Tailevu man said it takes a lot of sacrifice and hardwork to be on the extended squad.

“Being in the wider squad is a big achievement itself,” he said.

“It’s every young rugby player’s dream to be here – to play among the best players on the national side and I hope I get another chance in one of the legs.”

His secondary goal was to secure an overseas contract.

Kabu started playing rugby with Natakali Sharks, a team from Naiborebore, Tailevu before he joined Northland in the Vodafone Vanua championship.

He also played for the Police Blues sevens side.

He indicated he is grateful for the guidance of senior players in the squad including Sevuloni Mocenacagi, Suliano Volivolituevei and Waisea Nacuqu.

Kabu was also a fan of assistant coach Viliame Satala growing up and was fortunate to be guided by him.

“I have learnt a lot from the seasoned players especially on discipline and I would like to follow in their footsteps to also inspire the next generation.”

The national sevens squad began their DTE (Daily Training Exercise) on Friday after their Christmas break; they’ll march into camp next week.

Kolinisau will field a side at the McDonalds Fiji Coral Coast sevens on January 16-18 at Lawaqa Park, Sigatoka before he selects his Perth sevens side. Perth 7s will be on January 24-26 next year.
