The Sinukakala women’s sevens team will use the R.C. Manubhai Nataleira 7s tournament for game time for their players.
This was the gist of Manageress Esther Koronavatu interview with SUNsports yesterday.
“The team has been training together since November, so this is just a bunch of the Nasinu women’s provincial XV’s team,” she said.
“So, it just the transition from fifteens to sevens so these girls have been playing together while some have been playing in other clubs.”
Koronavatu said there has been a low turnout in training by their players due to their Christmas preparations.
“We have the ability to do well as we have been playing well in the under 20 Fiji Sports Council 7s series,” she said.
“We’ve been playing in all the finals, and we won three finals against bigger names like Seahawks.”
Koronavatu said their team consists of young players aged 20 who play in senior level provincial rugby.
“They are used to playing high intensity games and every afternoon they have their training run at Albert Park,” she said.
“We have gym sessions on Tuesdays and Thursday.”
Koronavatu said they aim to qualify for the final and win the women’s category.
“Alot of teams out there are strong so we’re not underestimating any teams, but we’ll try to work hard and make it to the final,” she said.
“We got our Fijiana reps and hopefully they’ll be able to play this weekend.”
Koronavatu said the experience of their players in the national team will be their trump card for the tournament.
“Most of our players are very young but are very experienced players as they’ve been playing together for a while,” he said.
“We have sports science students from Fiji National University that have joined us this sevens season, so we have a good team.”
Koronavatu said their new national reps in their team include Silika Qalo and Sera Bolatini.
