The Fiji men’s football team’s campaign for a spot at the FIFA 2026 World Cup suffered a huge setback.

This was after it was confirmed that captain Roy Krishna will miss the semi-final of the FIFA World Cup 2026 Oceania play-offs against New Zealand in March, next year.

Roy sustained a grade 3 Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury while playing for his club Odisha FC in the Indian Super League.

The injury has also ended his ISL season as he undergoes surgery later this month, followed by a rigorous recovery process.

The 37-year-old star striker has been the saviour of the national team during the World Cup play-offs.

Absence

Roy scored Fiji’s goal in their 1-0 win over Solomon Islands then the second goal in the 3-3 draw against Papua New Guinea. In the final pool match, he again scored in the 1-1 draw against New Caledonia in order for Fiji to qualify for the semi-final. Roy has scored 44 international goals for Fiji.

His absence is a challenge for strikers like Sairusi Nalaubu, Merrill Nand, Thomas Dunn, Setareki Hughes and Nabil Begg to rise to the occasion.

Roy, who has been the face of Fijian football for over a decade, revealed his disappointment but remains positive about the journey ahead.

“This is part of football,” he told SUNsports yesterday.

“Injuries happen, and while it’s a short setback, my focus now is on getting better, stronger, and back on the field.”

Faith

Roy acknowledged the challenge of missing such a crucial fixture for Fiji.

“It’s hard not to be out there with the team, especially in a game of this importance,” he said.

“But I have complete faith in my team-mates and coaches. I know they’ll give it their all, and I’ll be cheering for them from the sidelines.”

However, the Fiji squad is determined to carry forward their momentum and make their mark on the international stage.

Roy’s recovery will be closely watched, as fans and teammates alike anticipate his return to action.

For now, the legendary striker’s focus remains on his health and rehabilitation, with the hope of returning stronger and continuing his remarkable career.

Recovery

Odisha FC head coach, Sergio Lobera wishes Roy a speedy recovery and hopes to see him quickly return to football.

“We are deeply saddened to announce that Roy is out for the season, as confirmed earlier by our medical team.

“We are losing an incredible player and one of the best professionals I have ever worked with. I am confident he will recover well and come back stronger to help us.

‘It’s always difficult to accept such setbacks however; we must keep moving forward and remain focused on our work.”
