A former Republic of Fiji Military Forces’ Land Force Commander is part of the three-member team to investigate the boxing incident at Nadi’s Prince Charles Park, last Saturday.

Pita Driti along with the Ministry of Youth and Sports director Philip Heneriko and Boxing Commission of Fiji chairman Adi Narayan have been tasked to interview all stakeholders involved.

“We’ve been given 30 days to investigate,” Narayan said during a press conference in Suva yesterday.

He said the three-member investigating team has been given the Term of Reference (TOR) and this has been approved after consultation with the Minister for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru, who is out of the country.

The incident is on featherweight boxer Umbayd Haider who is in critical condition at the Lautoka Hospital after undergoing head surgery on Sunday.

He collapsed in the ring after his ninth round technical knockout loss to Australia’s Runqi Zhou for the IBO (International Boxing Organisation) Asia Pacific title.

Narayan said the fight was sanctioned by IBO and the BCF.

“The ring supervisor for the fight was IBO fight commissioner, Justin Kennedy and the referee Ignatius Missailidis while the judges were from Fiji.

“They’ll be all interviewed. Also the BCF will be interviewed but I’ll stand away from the investigating team. Even the promoter will be interviewed as well.”

He also indicated that they’ll also look at the cornermen, on whether they have the license to be there.

“We’re also looking at the Commission directors who were supposed to be checking out the cornermen on whether they were licensed. It’s all coming out.”

Narayan said also TOR covers the drug test from boxers after the fight and why it was not followed.
