Cut out mistakes, warns coach

“We know we can score points anywhere, but we can’t do that if we’re always on the back foot.”

Vodafone Fiji Bati head coach Wise Kativerata.

The Vodafone Fiji Bati has increased the intensity of their training this week as they prepare for tomorrow’s must-win clash against the Cook Islands at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva.

This was confirmed to SUNsports yesterday by Bati head coach Wise Kativerata.

“The focus this week is to complete our sets and get our kicks right,” Kativerata said.

“We know we can score points anywhere, but we can’t do that if we’re always on the back foot.”

He said they must avoid committing the same mistakes from last Saturday’s game against Papua New Guinea.

“It’s an important game as we want to end this Pacific Bowl Championship on a high note.

“Credit to Papua New Guinea, but our boys need to be prepared against Cook Islands.”

Kativerata said he was glad that international rugby league has finally arrived in Fiji.

“I can’t thank the crowd enough and we’re building towards the Rugby League World Cup.

“We got future Fiji Bati players coming through the ranks now for the next World Cup.”

Kativerata said the players’ communication on the field during training has impressed him.

“They’re now talking more, and they enjoy more which is good and I’m happy,” he said.

“James Valevatu has done well for Wests in the reserve grade, so we want to have a look at him this week.”

Kativerata said he would assess the players at the end of the tournament.

Bati players in the NRL who could not make the championship due to suspension and injuries include; Api Koroisau, Mika Ravalawa, Daniel Safaiti, Jacob Safaiti, Marcelo Montoya and Reagan Campbell- Gillard.
