Defence will be crucial for the Vodafone Fiji Bati side when they take on the Papua New Guinea Kumuls tonight.
These were the comments of captain Tui Kamikamica following their captain’s run at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva yesterday.
The Somosomo, Taveuni, native said they understood how passionate their Melanesian brothers are.
Kamikamica said that it has been a great week of training in Suva trying to build their combination with the halves, forwards and backs as well as blending in with the new players on the side.
The Bati will run out at 8.10pm at the HFC Stadium with four debutants.
“The game is going to be won in the middle,” the Melbourne Storm forward said.
“Whoever is going to bring a lot of energy in the half; that’s the main focus for us forwards this week is to build momentum on our defence, once we focus on defence, everything will take care of itself.”
The 30-year-old indicated that it was an honour and privilege to captain the side for the Pacific Bowl Championship at home; the Bati last played in Fiji in 2001.
He said PNG was never an easy side to defeat.
“We will look out for their aggression, they run the ball hard and tackle hard; that’s one of the things I spoke to the team about earlier in the week, the physicality from the Kumuls.
“In saying that, we also focus on ourselves individually, when everyone does their job individually it will make it easier for the team, so we’re not worried about what they bring we just worry about us.”
He added that the inclusion of Bulldogs’ Viliame Kikau has boost the side after he missed last year’s championship.
