Crossbencher Member of Parliament (G9) Mosese Bulitavu has acknowledged the release of 2000 civilian coup leader George Speight.
Mr Bulitavu is the first G9 MP to react to Mr Speight’s release.
Mr Speight was granted Presidential immunity on Thursday following the review of his application by the Mercy Commission on Wednesday.
“He (Speight) has served his time! we need to move away from our past and through reconcilliation seek restoration,” Mr Bulitavu said.
“The Republic of Fiji Military Forces is leading the process of reconcilliation and the release of Ilikini Naitini, also known as George Speight, is a breakthrough towards the right direction.
“Only few of us politicians who have also served time behind bars will understand why a fully rehabilitated prisoner deserves a second chance,” Mr Bulitavu said.
“For us outside the walls of prison, we need to unlock the second prison, which is the view of society on the crimes they committed and accepted them back as one of us after undergoing the Fiji Corrections Service rehabilitation process.”
