47th Independence anniversary preparations begin

The National Government is beginning preparations for the 47th Independence Anniversary celebrations on July 7 this year.

A Government Organising Committee headed by the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Office of the Prime Minister and Cabinet with support from other line Ministries began the planning process in a series of meetings early this month.

Solomon Islands gained political independence from Britain on 7th July 1978 and the country turns 47 this year.

This year, July 7th falls on Monday.

The Government has approved a series of events leading up to the Independence Day celebrations including the revival of the annual National Trade Fair, Sporting events and a weeklong music and cultural performances.

The Trade Fair is organized by the Ministry of Commerce, Industry, Labour and Immigration, Sporting events by the Ministry of Education and Human Resources, Music and Cultural performances by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism in collaboration with the Ministry of Home Affairs and the National Independence Organising Committee.

The Theme for this year’s Independence Anniversary celebration will be finalized and announced soon.

Chairman for the Independence Anniversary Committee and Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Jeffery Sade Deve said the Committee will work hard to ensure this year’s celebrations are bigger and successful.
